Summary / History

HEIRLOOM - The Ashley cucumber was developed by Clemson University’s South Carolina Truck Experiment Station, South Carolina’s oldest agricultural research station. Released in 1956, it was specifically bred to withstand hot, humid summers of the American South. The Southeastern United States climate created the perfect environment for rapid fungal and bacterial growth, which is why breeders specifically targeted heat tolerance and disease resistance when creating the Ashley cucumber. To make sure the vines wouldn't succumb to the region's oppressive summer humidity, it was specifically bred from older heat-tolerant varieties like Puerto Rico 40 and Marketer. Ashley cucumber has been a staple for southern home gardeners and market growers for over 70 years due to its dependable disease resistance and ability to survive in environments where other cucumber varieties failed.

Plant Characteristics

The Ashley cucumber is a high-yielding heirloom that thrives in hot, humid climates. Dark green cucumbers grow to 7-8 inches long and have slightly tapered ends. They are known for their crisp texture, small seed cavity and mild, sweet flavor. Excellent for fresh slicing, salads and sandwiches. While technically a slicing variety, they can also be used to make quick, crispy refrigerator pickles. Vigorous vines thrive in full sun and require rich, well-draining soil with consistent moisture. Vines typically grow to a height of 2-4 feet but can spread along the ground or climb to lengths of 5-6 feet when supported by a trellis. Plants remain productive and vigorous in hot, humid climates while many cucumber varieties wither in intense heat and humidity. Highly resistant to Downy Mildew and is less susceptible to Powdery Mildew. Ready to harvest in 55-65 days.
