Summary / History
HEIRLOOM - Homemade Pickles is an American heirloom cucumber that was introduced in the mid-to-late 20th century. While there is no official documentation on who created Homemade Pickles, it was developed as an improved, modern open-pollinated variety specifically for home gardeners and home canning. Plant breeders created Homemade Pickles to make pickling at home easier, more reliable and cost effective. While commercial pickling cucumbers were bred for machine harvesting, Homemade Pickles were specifically bred to produce massive, concentrated yields over a long growing season. As a result, home gardeners were able to harvest small batches of fresh cucumbers daily or weekly for small-batch canning. It was also bred with strong resistance to common cucumber issues to ensure that home gardeners could get a reliable crop without heavy pesticide use. Homemade Pickles is considered one of the most popular open-pollinated pickling cucumbers for home gardeners.
Plant Characteristics
Making pickles at home is easy with the Homemade Pickles cucumber. The dark green cucumbers are short, firm and slightly bumpy with thick, solid flesh that stays crunchy when soaked in brine. They grow up to 6 inches long, with length dictating texture and crunch. Whether picked at 1.5 - 2 inches for baby gherkins or at 3 - 4 inches for crisp dill spears, this variety is bred to stay firm and sweet at any stage. The mild, refreshing flavor combined with the crisp texture makes it the quintessential pickler. It is a vigorous, heirloom bush variety that grows 12 - 24 inches tall with vines that spread up to 4 - 5 feet wide. The semi-bush shape makes it a great fit for larger containers or small gardens. It is a heavy producer over a long harvest season. Resistant to Downy Mildew, Powdery Mildew, Anthracnose and Cucumber Mosaic Virus. Ready to harvest in 55 - 60 days.
