HEIRLOOM - The Long Green Improved cucumber originated in the United States and was released commercially in 1842. It was derived from the Long Green Turkey cucumber, which dates back prior to 1778. It was released as an improved selection, yielding dependable crops during the period when John Tyler was president. It was further refined around 1874 to enhance early yields while keeping the traits of its robust ancestor. Used for both slicing and pickling, it became a staple for 19th-century market gardeners.
Plant Characteristics
Long Green Improved cucumbers are best known for growing up to 10-12 inches long. They are medium-to-dark green with a bumpy texture and tiny black spines. The crisp, white flesh is mild, refreshing and entirely non-bitter. They make a great addition to fresh salads and sandwiches when they are harvested at full length (10+ inches). They can also be harvested at 5-6 inches for pickling, as they hold their texture well when brined or used for sweet pickles. Plants require full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Vigorous climbing vines reach 3-4 feet long and can be left to trail on the ground or grown on a trellis or stake to save space and grow straighter cucumbers. Frequent harvesting encourages the vines to keep producing all season long. Ready to harvest in 55-65 days.
