Summary / History

HEIRLOOM - The original Marketmore cucumber was developed in 1968 by vegetable breeder Dr. Henry Munger at Cornell University in New York. Dr. Henry Munger spent over 55 years making vegetables healthier and stronger for home gardeners and farmers. Before he created the original Marketmore, common cucumber diseases had ruined many crops. When he released Marketmore in 1968, it was a huge success due to its ability to resist plant diseases while maintaining great flavor. He spent another eight years improving Marketmore's strength. By 1976, he released the improved version, Marketmore 76, which had stronger disease resistance against powdery mildew and cucumber mosaic virus. It also stayed crisp and sweet in hot weather, which is why it still remains a favorite for gardeners to this day.

Plant Characteristics

The Marketmore 76 cucumber is a highly popular slicing variety renowned for producing long, crisp cucumbers that stay sweet even in hot weather. While many cucumbers get a bitter taste when the plant gets stressed by heat, Marketmore 76 naturally remains mildly sweet. The uniform, dark-green cucumbers grow 8-9 inches long and can be enjoyed fresh or pickled. Vigorous vines grow to a height of 5-6 feet if grown on a trellis and can spread about 3-5 feet wide if left to trail on the ground. Vines and leaves handle intense summer sun without scorching. Does well in hot and humid southern climates. Strongly resistant to Cucumber Mosaic Virus, Downy Mildew, Powdery Mildew, Scab, Angular Leaf Spot, and Anthracnose. Its strong resistance to molds and viruses help keep the plants alive and fruiting much longer than other varieties. Ready to harvest in 60-70 days.
