Summary / History

HEIRLOOM - The Muncher cucumber was developed by the University of Washington. It was specifically bred to be burpless, which meant breeders eliminated the compound cucurbitacin, which is responsible for the bitter flavor and burps. It was given the name "Muncher" due to it being snackable; often described as being able to eat it like an apple straight from the garden. Even though the Muncher cucumber was bred in the United States, it is a Lebanese-style heirloom with a strong Middle Eastern and Israeli cucumber lineage.

Plant Characteristics

Muncher cucumbers are renowned for their crisp texture and sweet, mild and non-bitter flavor. These slicing cucumbers grow up to 6-9 inches long and have thin, smooth skin that is nearly spineless, which means they do not need to be peeled before eating. When allowed to grow to their full size, they are low acid and burpless, making them perfect for salads and fresh eating. They are excellent for pickling when harvested early at 4-6 inches long. Vigorous, sprawling vines typically spread 3-4 feet but can grow up to 4-6 feet when supported by a trellis or fence. Delivers abundant harvests, often yielding about 2-3 pounds of cucumbers per vine. Strong resistance to Cucumber Mosaic Virus, Powdery Mildew, Downy Mildew, Alternaria Leaf Spot, Anthracnose, and Scab. Ready to harvest in 60-65 days.
