Summary / History

HEIRLOOM - In 1935, the Straight Eight cucumber was released to the market by the Ferry-Morse Seed Company. It was created in response to demand for perfectly uniform, straight slicing cucumbers. Cucumbers before Straight Eight grew crooked, tapered or lost their deep-green color as they matured, which made them less appealing for commercial markets. The introduction of Straight Eight revolutionized home and market gardens because of its uniform cylindrical shape, blunt rounded ends, and crisp texture. As a result, it earned the prestigious All-America Selections (AAS) Gold Medal the same year it was released, an honor not many cucumber varieties achieve. It remains a staple in home and market gardens more than 90 years after its introduction.

Plant Characteristics

The Straight Eight cucumber is a 1935 All-America Selections (AAS) winner. As the name suggests, they are remarkably uniform and perfectly straight. The cylindrical-shaped, dark-green cucumbers grow to exactly 8 inches long and have crisp, mild and sweet flesh that never turns bitter. They have a small seed cavity, which means fewer watery seeds and more firm, sliceable flesh. Straight Eight cucumbers are quite versatile, as they can be harvested early for pickling or allowed to reach full size to serve as the ultimate slicing cucumber. Plants require full sun, rich well-draining soil and consistent moisture. Vigorous vines can spread up to 4-5 feet, so they need plenty of room or a sturdy trellis to climb; a trellis will save garden space and ensure straight, blemish-free cucumbers. Widely-adapted and will perform well in all growing zones during the warm growing season. Ready to harvest in 55-65 days.
