Plant Characteristics

The Wisconsin SMR-58 is considered the best non-hybrid pickling cucumber. The dark green, black-spined cucumbers grow to 4-6 inches long and have thin skins that allow the vinegar brine to easily soak into the flesh. While primarily used for making crisp, homemade pickles, their mild flavor and crisp texture also makes them perfect for eating fresh in salads and dips. Vigorous vines typically grow 3-5 feet long; they can be left to sprawl on the ground or trellised to save space and grow straighter cucumbers. Plants are highly resistant to Scab and Cucumber Mosaic Virus. Grows well in short, cool northern seasons. Ready to harvest in 55-60 days. Frequent harvesting forces the plants to make more cucumbers.
