Summary / History
F1 Hybrid - The Beefmaster F1 Hybrid tomato was a beefsteak hybrid that was introduced and released to the gardening public in 1978 by W. Atlee Burpee & Co. During the mid 1900s, commercial seed companies recognized that classic, large heirloom beefsteaks were prone to cracking and soil-borne diseases. Through selective breeding, breeders set out to create a first-generation (F1) cross that combined the giant size and meatiness of heirloom beefsteaks with modern, robust disease resistance. While the exact parentage remains a secret, its genetics trace back to historical beefsteak lines. It was engineered to yield uniform, massive red tomatoes on indeterminate vines while eliminating the deep cracks and rough shoulders common in older heirloom tomatoes. Since its release date, Beefmaster F1 Hybrid has become a staple for home gardeners wanting massive yields of giant slicing tomatoes that have strong resistance to common garden ailments.
Plant Characteristics
Beefmaster F1 Hybrid is known for producing some of the largest and most flavorful tomatoes in home gardens. Beefmaster F1 Hybrid routinely wins the size award at county fairs and contests; the massive, meaty red tomatoes typically weigh between 16-32 ounces each. The flavor is described as sweet and mild with a rich, classic tomato taste. They are dense, meaty, solid and nearly seedless, making them perfect for slicing onto sandwiches and burgers or cooking down into sauces and stews. They grow on indeterminate, heavy-yielding vines that produce tomatoes throughout the season until the first frost. The vines typically grow between 6 to 8 feet tall, requiring sturdy stakes, tall tomato cages or trellises to support the massive, heavy tomatoes. Strong resistance to Verticillium Wilt, Fusarium Wilt, Root Knot Nematodes, Alternaria Stem Canker, Bacterial Spot and Gray Leaf Spot.
