Plant Characteristics

The Chocolate Cherry tomato is known for its unique dark color and complex, savory-sweet flavor that is much deeper than a standard red cherry tomato. The flavor is described as very sweet and juicy with savory, smoky, and earthy undertones. The small, 1 inch round tomatoes mature to a brick-red color overlaid with dark purple-brown shading, giving them a distinct chocolate hue. Due to its slightly larger profile, the Chocolate Cherry tomato is often classified by gardeners and grocery stores as a cocktail tomato. They have thin, smooth skin that is highly crack-resistant. Eat them fresh or cook them down to create concentrated, sweet and savory sauces. Indeterminate plants grow up to 4 to 6 feet tall, requiring staking or trellising for support as the vines do not stop growing or setting tomatoes until frost. Chocolate Cherry tomatoes grow in cascading trusses; vigorous indeterminate vines produce heavy, elongated clusters containing about 6 to 10 tomatoes.
