Summary / History

HEIRLOOM - Gold Nugget is a heirloom cherry tomato developed in the early 1980s by Dr. James Baggett at Oregon State University (OSU). He was a renowned horticulturalist who led a 30 year career as a vegetable breeder at OSU. He created Gold Nugget by focusing on traits that favored short growing seasons. As a result, Gold Nugget was an incredibly early producer that thrived in cooler climates and short growing seasons, which made it ideal for the Pacific Northwest. Released to the seed market in 1983, it became a highly popular variety for both container gardening and short-season growing. Its reliable garden performance and high-quality traits earned it the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in England.

Plant Characteristics

Gold Nugget is an early-maturing, bright golden-yellow cherry tomato prized for its candy-like sweetness. They have a very sweet, mild and fruity flavor, similar to other gold tomatoes like Sun Sugar or Sungold. They are juicy and thin-skinned with a tender flesh, offering a melt in your mouth, candy-like taste. They are exceptionally low acid, making them very gentle on the stomach. Gold Nugget tomatoes are round to slightly oval, weigh less than an ounce each and measure about 1 inch in diameter. When picked early, the tomatoes are often completely seedless (parthenocarpic). Ideal for fresh snacking and adding bright color to salads. As a determinate variety, it grows to a height of 2-4 feet, produces its tomatoes over a short, heavy harvest window and then dies. The plants grow into compact, manageable bushes, making them a fantastic choice for small gardens, patios and large containers. Highly productive plants yield clusters of golden-yellow cherry tomatoes in 55-60 days, making it one of the fastest producing tomato varieties. Plants thrive in both cooler northern climates and hot southern summers.
