F1 HYBRID - The Jet Star F1 Hybrid tomato was developed and introduced in 1969 by the Joseph Harris Company (now Harris Seeds). It was selectively bred from two distinct, high-quality parent lines to combine the best qualities of commercial production with top-tier flavor and resilience. It was specifically engineered to overcome many of the issues associated with older heirloom tomatoes, such as cracking, scarring, and low yields. It remained their top-selling hybrid tomato for decades, as highlighted by its inclusion in the 1979 Harris seed catalog. By the late 1970s, the Jet Star F1 Hybrid had become an industry staple for home gardeners, commercial growers and farm stands. In regions of Pennsylvania, it was commercially sold as the "Washington Boro Tomato"; its reliability, appearance and sweet, low-acid flavor led it to become a staple crop at farm stands. Its resistance to Verticillium Wilt and Fusarium Wilt (Race 1) allowed it to be highly adaptable and dependable across various growing climates, which led to its massive commercial success.

Plant Characteristics

Jet Star F1 Hybrid is an early-to-mid season hybrid tomato that is beloved by home gardeners and market growers for its disease resistance and exceptionally sweet, low-acid flavor. The naturally high sugar content masks acidity, making these tomatoes incredibly popular among people with sensitive stomachs. The bright red, firm, globe-shaped slicing tomatoes average about 6 to 8 ounces each and have thin skin that resists cracking and scarring. Their meaty interiors and lack of deep cores make them excellent for canning and sauce making. Their sweet, mild and classic flavor make them ideal for fresh eating, salads and sandwiches. They grow on indeterminate, high-producing vines that produce tomatoes throughout the season until the first frost. The sturdy vines typically reach 4-5 feet tall; will require sturdy stakes, tall tomato cages or trellises to stay upright and maximize yield. Adapts well to various climates and has strong resistance to Verticillium Wilt and Fusarium Wilt (Race 1). This early-maturing hybrid is ready to harvest in about 72 days.
