Summary / History
F1 Hybrid - Lemon Boy Plus F1 is an improved hybrid tomato developed by Vegetables by Bayer. Introduced to the market in the early 2020s, it was developed as an upgraded version of the original Lemon Boy tomato, which was first bred by John Peto at Petoseed in 1984. The original Lemon Boy was renowned in the 1980s as one of the first true lemon-yellow tomatoes on the market. After acquiring Petoseed in 2018, Bayer decided to build on the original's success. To create the "Plus" version, Bayer focused on expanding the plant's disease resistance while increasing the flavor. As a result, Lemon Boy Plus F1 improves upon the original by offering larger tomatoes, a firmer texture for better shelf life, stronger disease resistance and a sweeter, tangier flavor. It gained popularity in the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons as home gardeners sought out upgraded, highly disease-resistant and sweeter slicing varieties.
Plant Characteristics
Lemon Boy Plus F1 is the upgraded version of the classic Lemon Boy tomato, offering enhanced disease resistance and a sweeter, tangier flavor profile. With a Brix rating of 6.6, it features an elevated sugar-to-acid balance compared to the original Lemon Boy. Lemon-yellow, flattened-round beefsteak tomatoes weigh between 5-8 ounces each and measure about 3.5 inches in diameter. The upgraded version features tomatoes with firmer texture, which reduces blemishes and cracking, allowing for longer post-harvest storage. The perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors make these tomatoes ideal for fresh eating or gourmet yellow pasta sauces. Harvest slightly early for a sharper, more acidic bite or let them fully ripen for maximum sweetness. Vigorous, indeterminate plants typically grow 5-8 feet tall, requiring staking or trellising for support as the vines do not stop growing or setting tomatoes until frost. Highly resistant to Fusarium Wilt (Races 1, 2 and 3), Verticillium Wilt, Tomato Mosaic Virus, Root-Knot Nematodes, Gray Leaf Spot and Leaf Molds.
