Summary / History

F1 Hybrid - Originating in Japan, Suncherry Extra Sweet F1 Hybrid was developed by the Tokita Seed Company, a major Japanese seed breeder. Prior to 1984, tomatoes in Japan were limited to large slicers that were acidic and not able to be easily transported. It took the Tokita Seed Company 9 years to produce a cherry tomato adapted to Japan's climate. The first variety was introduced in 1984 and was named “Suncherry”; “Suncherry RB” and “Super Suncherry” followed after. When Suncherry Extra Sweet F1 Hybrid was introduced to the market in 1990, it was an instant commercial hit. Bred for exceptional eating quality and strong field performance, it was formulated to combine high sugar content with strong disease resistance. As an F1 hybrid, it was specifically engineered to offer high resistance to Fusarium Wilt (Race 1) and Tobacco Mosaic Virus. As a result, it commanded 80% of Japan’s cherry tomato market by 1997.

Plant Characteristics

Often referred to as the red-skinned counterpart to the famous Sun Gold tomato, Suncherry Extra Sweet F1 Hybrid is an early-maturing cherry tomato known for its intense, candy-like sweetness. With a Brix rating of 9-10, it is one of the sweetest red cherry tomatoes available. Exceptionally sweet, fruity and aromatic, it frequently tops grower polls and taste tests for red cherry tomatoes. Deep red, bite-sized tomatoes are 1/4-3/4 ounce each and are crack-resistant with a satisfying, juicy pop. Their thin skins make them ideal for snacking and fresh salads. Vigorous, indeterminate plants typically grow 4-5 feet tall, requiring staking or trellising for support as the vines do not stop growing or setting tomatoes until killed by frost. Plants produce long, heavy clusters that hold 20-40 bite-sized tomatoes. Highly resistant to Fusarium Wilt (Race 1) and Tobacco Mosaic Virus. Ready to harvest in just 55-65 days.
