Summary / History
F1 Hybrid - Released in 1999, SunSugar F1 Hybrid was developed in Japan by Petoseed, a major international seed company. It was bred as a direct rival and improvement to the wildly popular SunGold F1. While SunGold F1 was beloved for its exceptional taste, it was known for splitting open after heavy rain. Petoseed developed SunSugar F1 Hybrid to create an orange cherry tomato that combined extraordinary sweetness with improved crack resistance and disease resistance. Petoseed boosted the nutritional value of SunSugar F1 Hybrid by purposely breeding it to be high in vitamin A and beta-carotene, which it gets from its deep orange hue. To ensure reliable harvests for home gardeners, it was bred to have high resistance to Fusarium Wilt (Race 1) and Tobacco Mosaic Virus. In 2009, it gained widespread recognition when major gardening publication Sunset Magazine named SunSugar F1 Hybrid as the best-tasting tomato in their trials; it actually edged out SunGold F1 for first place.
Plant Characteristics
SunSugar F1 Hybrid is a cherry tomato known for its intense, candy-like sweetness balanced by a classic tangy tomato bite. Boasting a Brix rating of 9-11, it is one of the sweetest cherry tomatoes available. Despite their sweetness, they retain the complex, acidic, "true tomato" profile. Vibrant golden-orange, bite-sized tomatoes are 1/2-3/4 ounce each; their golden-orange color signifies three times the Vitamin A of standard red cherry tomatoes. Very juicy with remarkably thin skin that manages to stay crack-resistant. A favorite for fresh snacking right off the vine or adding bursts of sweet flavor and vibrant color to salads and gourmet dishes. Vigorous, indeterminate plants grow, flower and set tomatoes until frost. Plants typically grow 5-8 feet tall, requiring strong staking, trellising or a heavy-duty tomato cage. Plants produce heavy yields of golden-orange, bite-sized tomatoes in long, abundant trusses in 62-75 days. Strong resistance to Fusarium Wilt (Race 1) and Tobacco Mosaic Virus.
