Summary / History

HEIRLOOM - During the 1950s, the Tigerella tomato was developed in the United Kingdom by British horticulturist Dr. Lewis Darby. He created this English heirloom at the Glasshouse Crops Research Institute by selectively crossing the classic red salad tomato known as Ailsa Craig with an unknown cultivar. His goal was to create an early-maturing, high yielding, bi-colored, and disease-resistant salad tomato. Introduced to the market in the early 1970s, Tigerella tomato gained widespread commercial and home garden popularity due to its excellent yield and disease resistance, on top of its distinct look and exceptionally tangy-sweet, fruity flavor. In 1993, it was awarded the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. In some parts of the UK, it is historically referred to as Mr. Stripey and occasionally Tiger Tom.

Plant Characteristics

Famous for their striking, glossy skin, Tigerella tomatoes are a vibrant red with jagged, bright yellow-orange stripes; no two tomatoes are exactly alike. They weigh between 2-6 ounces, averaging about the size of a golf ball or small tennis ball. Under the thin skin is a zesty, tangy, and sweet-tart flavor. In addition to being a fantastic standalone snack, they also make an excellent medium-sized slicing tomato for sandwiches and burgers. They grow on indeterminate, high-producing vines that produce tomatoes throughout the season until the first frost. Will require a trellis, cage, or staking as the plants grow tall, often reaching 5-9 feet. Plants have good general resistance to common tomato ailments. This variety is early-maturing and known for being hardier in cooler or humid climates than many other heirloom tomatoes.
